The second advantage is power, since hydraulics are much more powerful than pneumatics, allowing the mole to penetrate even solid rock.
By pulling in a new pipe behind it, the machine is able to replace an existing pipe entirely without the need for a trench.

On arriving at a local producing plant, we were on a mission to discover a powerful odour coming from somewhere. After looking in the front office restrooms and checking all floor drains, mainlines, and restrooms in the warehouse, no odours were found. Then we went up on the roof to test the vent stack.
It seemed the wind was blowing in the precise direction towards the HVAC intake, which pushed some of the sewer gas down into the ladies’ restroom at work area. The client looked grateful that we solved the puzzle. He called 2 other San Francisco plumbers who could not find the source of the odour. The smell disapeared after the wind changed direction and we advocated raising the vent stack three feet above the HVAC intake. The buyer will be calling us back shortly with a call. Who would image something similar to that. We were called out to diagnose an issue with a commercial water heater, and as it seems there had been an issue with their roof mounted HVAC unit. After some testing, 2 of our San Francisco plumbers worked out the HVAC unit was sending massive blasts of air that kept blowing out the gas flame. The pilot light just would not stay lit. Another puzzle solved by your number one San Francisco plumber. Stranger things have happened.
